What Caused The Beautiful Streaks On Some Famous Tulips?
The beautiful streaks of the Semper Augustus (pictured) and other famous Tulips - streaks that helped trigger a frenzy of demand during Tulip Mania - were also a curse. In the early twentieth century, these bold flares were found to be caused by the 'Tulip Breaking Virus', which weakened the Bulb with each new generation and would eventually drive the breed extinct. It is for this reason that, sadly, legendary Tulips such as the Semper Augustus no longer exist today.
